Botany for the Botanical Artist with Anne Bebbinton

Anne visited Eden for two days to give us a thorough and fascinating guide to botany for illustrators. The first day concentrated on analysing the structure of flowers and producing cross-sections, with some wonderful examples of exotic flowers from the biomes. Anne showed us how to produce a ‘floral formula’: a simple notation system to aid the recording of a flower structure, especially useful for working in the field. Day two concentrated on the structure of Asteraceae, going on to look at classifying types of fruit. Anne answered all the many queries and questions we put to her clearly and enthused us all to improve our botanical skills further. We also were given guidance on taking photographs using a microscope, being shown some suprisingly cheap and effective ways of catching small details on your camera.
