Learn Botanical Illustration at the Eden Project

What you’ll learn

Botanical illustration is all about looking at plants in a traditional but exciting way. Here’s what you’ll be doing…

History of botanical illustration: how the traditional methods of watercolour, pen and ink and graphite have been used for centuries and cannot be replaced by photography alone.

Introduction to botany: you will be shown how to observe, what to look for and how to make plants come to life on paper. We will be looking at the fruits of Eden this autumn, from the familiar to the more unusual, to inspire us!

Botanical drawing: we’ll teach you how to do accurate botanical drawing in pencil, using shading to make your illustrations look three-dimensional and life-like. We’ll also help you to arrange your subject on the paper.

In a nutshell, you will have three days for illustration where we will concentrate on accurate drawing, tonal shading and finishing touches, allowing plenty of time for accuracy – the key to a beautiful illustration. Whilst attention to detail is important, botanical illustration is a very relaxing and enjoyable art form.
