Residency in Virginia

Views of the hills in Upperville, VA.

Our Vice Chair Laura Silburn is delighted to have been selected for the Oak Springs Garden Foundation botanical art residency.

Due to other commitments Laura is not able to participate in 2024 but the Foundation have kindly allowed a deferral to 2025.

The website explains that

“This program supports botanical artists working to a high national and international standard who create beautiful and accurate depictions of plant species…This residency provides botanical artists time and space to work on their own projects, utilizing materials from our formal garden or the broader 700-acre landscape, and to visit our rare book library that includes many examples of historical botanical art.”

We were very lucky to have one of our assessors – Chris Bisson – giving the presentation at our AGM in 2023. Chris assesses the botanical accuracy of paintings being submitted into the archive, and he came to talk about herbaria as this is something we are developing in the Flori at the moment, so that in future there is an herbarium specimen of almost every plant painted for the archive. Listening to Chris and writing this article was both an interesting and educational exercise for me. I needed to research the people he referred to and looked at the links he gave for online websites and documents; some are updated (all the links are below), and it was fascinating to find out more about the history of herbaria and who was involved. He gave us so much useful information and I have tried to include as much as I can. I also added a new book to my collection. Now I am preparing my first specimens for the Flori herbarium and feel a lot more confident about doing it right.
